The Hit is A Hit

Bruce Von Stiers

Jason A. White has worked around films and television for quite a while. He was a production staffer on Kyle XY and Madigan Men. Jason also co-wrote the screenplay for The Silver Case, which starred Eric Roberts and Seymour Cassel. In addition, Jason has also written the screenplays for several short films.

Now, Jason has taken things to a higher level. He makes his directorial debut with the short film The Hit. It is a comedy about a hired killer who falls for her target. Jason also wrote the screenplay for the film.

Hilary Barraford plays Marcy Frumpkin, a hired killer, or hit-woman. Hilary has starred , or co-starred, in quite a few short films, including one I reviewed some time ago called The After Party. Hillary also co-starred with Toni Collette and John Corbett and Brie Larson in The United States of Tara. Additionally, Hilary starred opposite James Edward Olmos in the film Go For Sisters, appeared in the recent sci-fi film Life Like and is in the upcoming Ice T film, Equal Standard. Along with acting, Hilary is a producer. She was a executive producer on the indie film The Ice Cream Truck. She currently has a film project with Virginia Madsen and Ireland Bassinger Baldwin titled Miles From Yesterday.

It seems that Marcy had a cheating boyfriend who she ends up killing. Jeff Lorch plays the boyfriend. Marcy finds that she's good at killing, and makes a career out of being a killer for hire. In fact, in the first scene of the film, Marcy goes to a house and shoots someone.

Marcy meets with the client, played by Craig Cackowski. According to one of my sources, Craig “is kind of a big deal in the comedy world.” He has been featured in several episodes of Drunk History among other comedic roles.

An employee, Norman, has been stealing from the client, so he wants that guy dead. The client wants the death to be really violent. Marcy accepts the contract and then goes to find the target.

Marcy sets things up, only to discover that the target wants to kill himself. Well, Marcy can't have any of that, can she? How is she going to get the rest of the money owed her if the guy kills himself?

Marcy stops the suicide attempt and low and behold, she falls for Norman. Hard. The rest of the film is about their budding relationship. Until things end, with a bang so to speak.

Norman is played by Matthew Rocheleau. His credits include guesting on Jane The Virgin, Heathers and The Goldbergs.

There are some funny, lovey dovey scenes in the film. These scenes include clothes shopping, holding hands in front of an obvious green screened field of flowers and joy riding in a stolen sports car. They are a bit cheesy but kind of cute too, as the romance begins to blossom.

Hillary Hattenbach, Jared Mazzaschi and Hannah Amelia Jauregui all have minor roles in the film. Kamila Brenneysen was the producer.

The film, as it is a short, comes in at about seven and half minutes.

The acting in The Hit was very good. The characters weren't cartoonish or over played. The green screened scenes, although obvious, were well done too.

I really enjoyed The Hit. Even though I knew that Marcy and Norman probably weren't destined to ride off into the sunset together, it was a nice romantic comedy with a decided twist.

I seem to be in good company for liking The Hit. The film just won The Best Short Film award at the Idyllwild Film Festival. That festival also gave Hilary the Indie Spirit Award for Best Actress in A Short Film award for The Hit. And Jason got Best Director- Short Film from the festival.

The film is being shown at various film festivals at this point.
