Rocking Horror Stories

Bruce Von Stiers

Grabbing some ideas from some of the theme albums out there, The Publishing Mills came up with an idea to put rock and roll stars on a CD reading rock horror stories. The result is called Shock Rock. It is based on a book that Jeff Gelb edited.

Shock Rock features Jeff Gelb, Joan Jett, Fee Waybill, Bruce Johnston, Brian Grillo, Scott Ian, Bill Mumy and Greg Kihn. All of these rock stars read stories by today's top horror writers.

Greg Kihn reads Odeed, a stage story from David J. Schow. Nicky and his band are on stage. The band was going full tilt. The fans were going to riot. Then all Hell breaks loose. The OD in the story is pure adrenaline. Nicky and 'Gasm drive the fans wild. The end of the concert is as good as it gets. The fans go all the way.

Voodoo Child is all about a musician named Charlie, who used to be a friend of Jimi Hendrix. He gets together with Jimi even though he had been dead for a long time. Nobody believes that Charlie has seen Jimi. Then Jimi directs Charlie to find the apartment where he died. Afterwards Charlie learns the true nature of Jimi's voodoo chile. The story is read by Jeff Gelb and was written by horror master Graham Masterson.

Dedicated To The One I Loathe. This story was written by Michael Garret and read by Bruce Johnston. Two detectives investigate a few murders. These murders were set up to imitate golden oldies songs. Old 45 singles are left at the murder scenes. There is also a connection to K99, an oldies radio station.

Other stories include Requiem, read by Joan Jett and The Black '59, written by Bill Mumy and Peter David, and read by Bill Mumy. There is also Ray Garton's Weird Gig, read by Brian Grillo and Bootleg by Mark Verheiden. Bootleg was read by Fee Waybill. And Michael Newton's Reunion was read by Scott Ian.

In addition to the 3 CD's containing stories, there is a fourth CD that contains songs. There is the Shock Rock Theme by Ronald King. Blue Oyster Cult's Don't Fear The Reaper and Billy Idol's White Wedding Day are included on the CD. There is also Greg Kihn's Jeopardy and Brian Grillo's Dad's Mad.

The signature piece on the Shock Rock album is Edgar Winter Group's Frankenstein.

If you like good rock and roll and are into horror stories, Shock Rock will thrill and chill you.
