A Week Of Death

Bruce Von Stiers

In a film about psychos and murder, Brad Pitt proves he can play the tough cop. I just finished watching Seven. Pitt stars along with Morgan Freeman in this psychological thriller.

William Somerset (Freeman) is a Detective Lieutenant on the police department. He is set to retire in seven days. Then he is paired up with Detective David Mills (Pitt) on the murder of an obese man.

Somerset discovers that the killer is trying to atone for the Seven Deadly Sins. Gluttony was the murder of the fat man. Then there is the brutal murder of an attorney. His sin was Greed.

The two detectives work hard to solve the murders and catch the killer before he goes through the entire list of sins. The killer gets through Lust, Pride and Sloth before a chance finding gets them close to him. He almost gets captured but beats up Mills instead.

As a subplot you get to meet Mills' wife, Tracy (Gywneth Paltrow). She doesn't like it here in the big city. She wishes David could go back home upstate to work.

In a final confrontational scene the final two sins, Envy and Wrath are dealt with.

Kevin Spacey plays the psychotic John Doe. I've liked Spacey's work every since he guest starred in a storyline for the undercover FBI show Wiseguy back in the late '80's.

For a gritty fast paced thriller, none is better than Seven.
