Great New Pop Music From Royal Teeth

Bruce Von Stiers

I am constantly being exposed to new and exciting music. Some of the artists and groups are newbies and others have been around for a while. One of those groups that has been around but I wasn't familiar with is Royal Teeth. They are an indie pop band originally out of Louisiana.

The band actually has a huge following. They've played Bonnaroo and SXSW. The band also performed in a March 2014 episode of American Idol and did their song “Wild” on Last Call With Carson Daly. That song has been heard in several television commercials along with being featured on the EA Sports videogame FIFA 13.

The band's first full studio album, Glow, was well received. Now they have a brand new album out. That album is sure to be more successful than Glow. The title of the new album is Hard Luck. It is being released by Round Hill Records

The album was recorded and produced by the band. It was mixed by Mark Needham. Projects he has worked on include albums by Imagine Dragons, The Killers and Bang Bang Romeo. Dave Cooley did the mastering at his Elysian Masters studio. He's mastered albums by Paramore and Jimmy Eat World among others.

All songs were written by the band except for Show What You Can Do, which has additional lyrics and music by Tunde Olaniran

The members of Royal Teeth are Nora Patterson, Gary Larsen, Thomas Onebane and Josh Hefner. Nora does vocals. Gary is on bass and does vocals. Thomas is on guitar and Josh does the percussion.

Hard Luck has ten songs and a play time of thirty-six minutes.

Never Gonna Quit is the first song. It is about preserving through life's trials. According to a published interview, the band considers the song to be the mission statement for the album. It is a cool, head bopping, toe-tapping song with great vocals and slick guitar and drums.

Show You What I Can Do features some lyrical rap from Tunde Olaniran. He is a musician whose albums include Transgressor and Stranger. This song has some cool guitar and drum behind strong vocals.

Get A Load Of This One is probably my favorite song on the album. It has a beat that will having you moving around right from the start. Having your life out there, the highs and lows, for all to see is kind of what the song is about.

Its Just The Start slows things down a bit. It is a ballad with mellow vocals.

Time Bomb is a cool anthem with great lead vocals from Nora.

The Best is a toe-tapping song about people wanting to be the best that they can be.

Things slow back down with Rivalry. It is a ballad with fluid yet aching lead vocals by Nora and solid backing vocals and great guitar.

Unbreakable has an almost electronic feel to its intro. Then things slide into an electro-pop-rock groove.

You Want To Make It Better is an interesting love ballad with fantastic vocals by Nora.

Arrival is the final song on the album. It is an anthem styled pop rock song. Once again Nora has strong lead vocals and the other vocals and guitar and drums do a great job.

Hard Luck is one of the best pop albums I've heard in a long time. With terrific music and lyrics, along with tremendous vocals, this album is destined to do well. And Royal Teeth has now become one of my favorite bands.

Hard Luck was released several days ago. You can hear it on Spotify, iTunes or grab a copy from your favorite online or traditional music source.
