Roxy's Great Self Titled Album
Bruce Von Stiers
As a youngster in the Seattle area, Roxy Coss was already winning jazz music competitions. While still in high school Roxy won an award for the saxophone playing at the Essentially Ellington Competition.
Roxy has been on the Today show and has performed at such top venues as Dizzy'a Club Coca-Cola and the Blue Note Jazz Club. She also lends her talents on saxophone to the New York area all woman jazz ensemble, the Diva Jazz Orchestra. Not only is Roxy a great saxophonist, she also plays a mean flute.
Most musicians aren't satisfied with just playing before live audiences. They also like to record music. Roxy is one of those musicians. She recorded a self titled album that was released early this year.
On this album Roxy plays both tenor and soprano saxophones. She also plays the flute.
Roxy composed all of the songs on the album. There are eight songs on the album and it has a play time of one hour.
Helping out on the album is Ryan Brennan on guitar, Kellan Harrison on bass and Shawn Baltazor on drums and percussion. Justin Kauflin played piano and the Rhodes and Kate Miller played both the flugelhorn and trumpet.
Wandering One is up first. It has a soft and gentle sound with light piano and smooth, subtle sax.
I loved the song Lately. It has an easy, late night dance on the balcony kind of tone.
The third song picks things up a bit with a slight samba sound. Roxy plays some cool flute on the song, which is called A New Time.
Enlightenment has a lot of piano, with an almost aching feel. This would be another song that you could really slow dance to.
The Slow Ascent has some terrific sax.
The fifth entry on the album is a fun, breezy toe-tapper called The Cherry On Top. Once again Roxy plays great flute.
I Think So has strong bass and light brushes to back Roxy's sax.
July is the last song on the album. It has a more modern, smooth jazz sound than the rest of the album.
Roxy Coss is a great saxophone and flute player. She is also a terrific composer. This self titled debut album should get Roxy some name recognition and endear her to both existing and new fans of her music.
