Really Going Live

Bruce Von Stiers

In keeping with their ongoing series, Peachpit Press has added a new title to the Real World books. This one is called Real World Adobe GoLive 4. It was written by Jeff Carlson and Glenn Fleishman, along with Neil Robertson and Agen Schmitz.

This book covers both the Macintosh and Windows version of GoLive 4. The book cover says that it has "Industrial-Strength Web Techniques."

The book is set up into four parts. The first part is GoLive Basics. The second part is all about pages. The third part covers what GoLive does with web sites. And the fourth part deals with advanced GoLive topics. There is also a two-part appendix for those little extra things not included in the text.

The first chapter is called Getting Started. This chapter covers everything from installing the program to creating and setting up a new web site. Each chapter of the book has a lot of tips. These are little tidbits that are supplemental to the text in the chapter. Without actually counting them, there are probably a couple of hundred tips sprinkled throughout the book.

The second chapter deals with the Inspector. These are a set of all-important tools that allow the user to perform HTML tasks in a quick and efficient manner. The chapter even opens with a bit from The Pink Panther Strikes Back when Inspector Clouseau inquires about if a dog will bite.

Other chapters in Part 1 cover the various palettes that GoLive uses and the ability to customize the program. There is a chapter that takes you through the layout and previewing of a web page.

The chapters in Part 2 go over what you can put on GoLive pages. Learn how to add images and tables. The book shows the most efficient way to add frames to a page and how layout grids can be beneficial. Learn about Floating Boxes and the text features.

Part 3 gets into the meat of why a lot people get GoLive. The chapters here cover site management, files, links and updating a site. Learn how to import a site in order to edit it. You'll find out how to establish site maps. There is a chapter on synchronizing and uploading your site to a server.

The last part, Part 4, deals with advanced topics like JavaScript and animation. Learn how to setup a rollover button on a page. Learn about how your site can be set up to support older browsers. There is a chapter on Cascading Style Sheet. There is also a chapter about web databases. The final chapter deals with the various plug-ins that you can allocate to use on your site.

The appendix has two parts. The second part is a master list of Cascading Style Sheet compatibility. The first part of the appendixes all about Macintosh issues when putting a site on the Web.

Real World GoLive 4 is the one book that anyone using GoLive should have. It takes you through much more than the manual could. It definitely does more for you than the Classroom In A Book can. Grab a copy of Real World GoLive 4 if you're serious about learning how to using GoLive 4 to it's full potential.

Real World GoLive 4 lists for $ 44.99. It can be found at your local bookstore.
