Web Surfing The Reboot Way

Bruce Von Stiers

b has a DVD collection for the Reboot computer animated series. These discs have titles like The Viral Wars and The Net. I just got done watching one called The Web. It starts right where the last episode of The Net stopped. There are four great computer generated animated episodes on this disc.

The disc comes with a few extra things. There are some character animation tests that show a character being rotated, giving you a 360 degree look. You can also view some of the vehicles used in the show and get a chance to check out the character gallery with people like the Web Surfer, Ray Tracer. The disc also has trailers of other ADV Films titles Shadow Raiders, Bubble Gum Crisis: Tokyo 2040 and a few others.

The Return of the Crimson Binome is the first episode on the disc. We find the heroes of this saga, Matrix, AndrAia and Frisket, trying for find a vessel to get them out onto the Web. They find out that the captain of a ship is being held in a jail. They bust him out and end up with another person on their team. It is Ray Tracer, a Web Surfer. He has an Australian accent and a definite attitude. Ray ends up saving AndrAia from some nasty cops. Ray Tracer agrees to act as the ship’s guide out onto the Web.

The second episode is Edge of Beyond. Here the crew of the Saucy Mare, the ship from the previous episode, are navigating the Web. They need to find a portal to another system, preferably Mainframe. As they surf the Web, they find out they aren’t alone and are attacked by some monsters. AndrAia is wounded and they have to try to save her.

In the third episode, Web Riders on the Storm, AndrAia is not getting any better. She is on the verge of deletion. The ship is still trying to chase down the web monster who infected her. If they can capture it, maybe AndrAia will be back to her old self. The web monsters end up attacking the ship. Their leader gets them to stop. It ends up that the leader is actually Bob in some kind of special suit.

Mousetrap is the last episode. With AndrAia on the mend, the Saucy Mare is trying to find its way to Mainframe. They will have to use every resource available to avoid the traps that Mouse had set up from Mainframe to keep out intruders. Bob must do some extraordinary things to get through the barriers to Mainframe.

If you aren’t a fan of computer animation, or just didn’t like the Reboot series when it was on television, then this isn’t a DVD to put on your shopping list. But if you like crisp, clean, computer generated animation and a great, but slightly skewed storyline, then Reboot: The Web is well worth getting. You might want to pick up the previous discs in the collection too. That way the storyline is uninterrupted.
