In a book that could have come from the movies, Ben Elton shows why he is in great demand as screenwriter. The novel is called Popcorn and it was published by St. Martin's Press. Popcorn was copyrighted in 1996.
Bruce Delamitri is one of those Hollywood directors. His movies aren't part of the normal movie fluff. Bruce's movies are reflections on the current culture and it's tendancy towards violence. Lots of people get killed in a Bruce Delamitri film. The characters are just to cool to be stopped.
Bruce's life is going pretty well. That is until he has an incredible bad night. First of all, he is trashed by a professor at his alma mater. Bruce goes to be a guest at the university, only to be openly debated on the over the top violence and sex in his films.
Then Bruce is insulted and dissed at an Oscar party. He gets to leave with a pretty girl though. But she turns out to be something else too.
And to top it all off, there are is a homicidal couple who are killing their way across the country. They are modeling themselves after people from Bruce's movies.
Wayne and his girl Scout are robbing and killing for the thrill of it. During the robbery of a convience store, they both get aroused. Scout doesn't want to have anyone watching them have sex, so Wayne kills all of the other people in the store.
Wayne decides that that need to visit Bruce and let him know how much they like his movies. They end up taking Bruce and his friend hostage.
The details in Popcorn are very graphic. The plot is very disturbing in that there are probably people out like Wayne and Scout. And there are definitely hard core killer movies out there (Natural Born Killers comes to mind).
Popcorn is not for the light and easy reader. It is hot, sexy, violence through and through.
