Coffee, Conversation And Words Unspoken
Bruce Von Stiers
Sometimes if you people watch, like in a restaurant or at a store, you can pick out the couples that have been married a long time. Usually they aren't goofy and giddy, like newlyweds. And, although some long-time married couples are grumpy with each other in public, mostly there's an easy rhythm between the two of them.
But maybe that easy rhythm is just on the surface. What if there's something going on that isn't quite visible? That is more or less what the short drama film Good Luck To Me is about.
There is a man and a woman having coffee together. It appears that they are a married couple. They have a little bit of a conversation, but there seems to be a lot being unsaid. Even though it's not too obvious, there is an air of tension surrounding the couple.
Moving from having coffee to dinner with wine, and finally drinks at the bar, there is just something that the two of them aren't saying to each other. The reason behind this vagueness is revealed later in the film. There is a final scene that is very dramatic and somewhat heartbreaking.
In the film credits, the characters are simply Him and Her. Him was played by Timothy J Cox. He has starred in numerous dramatic short films, including Hard Truths and After. He co-wrote the screenplay for this film. Heather Bayles played Her. She starred in the horror short film Kink Killers and the comedy short film New Face News Flash. Heather also co-wrote the screenplay for this film.
Maya Ahmed was the director. She had worked with Cox previously on Friends Forever, as producer and assistant director, producer and director on Hard Truths and assistant director on After.
Thomas Angeletti was the cinematographer. He directed Cox in Friends Forever and After and also Sundays With Dad.
Good Luck To Me provided a look at what could happen to a long-time married couple. Whether it is for better or worse is up to the viewer to decide. The acting was solid and very believable.
When asked about why he wrote a screenplay like this, Cox mentioned that he was inspired by Ingmar Bergman's film Scenes From A Marriage. “It just felt so real and raw and honest. I approached Heather Bayles with the idea and she was sold.”
Good Luck To Me is now making its way along the film festival circuit. An official release date for the film will be announced later.
