Killer Fun With Finlay

Bruce Von Stiers

Conversations that are overheard can easily be misconstrued. Without knowing the context of the conversation, a person's imagination can project wild things. Sometimes even dangerous or criminal things.

That scenario is what sets the scene for the latest novel by author Elle Cosimano. Known mainly for her YA novels, this is Cosimano's first foray into the world of adult fiction.

The title of the novel is Finlay Donovan Is Killing It. It was published by Minotaur Books just about a month ago.

Finlay Donovan is a single mom who also happens to be a romance novel author. Her husband ran off with their real estate agent, the bills are piling up and her agent and publisher both want the first draft of Finlay's next novel.

Having lunch with her agent at Panera, they discuss the new book, a suspense novel. Their conversation is overheard by a woman who assumes that Finlay is a hired killer. So, she wants Finlay to kill her husband. So, what's a writer to do who has an ex-husband who wants full custody of the two children, a toddler and a preschooler, past due bills and a deadline looming?

What ensues is a bizarre and thoroughly entertaining series of events. Finlay is far from being a suave novelist. She is more comfortable in yoga pants than in a cocktail dress. Finlay tries to do the right thing, and then ends up with a big mess on her hands. It doesn't help that her nanny, Vero, finds her in an awkwardly criminal situation. And Finlay's life just goes downhill from there.

Advance praise for this novel compares it to work by Janet Evanovich. While it doesn't really tread into Stephanie Plum territory, there are circumstances in the novel that will either make you shake your head or chuckle a little.

There is a bit of everything in the novel. There are abusive husbands, blackmailers, mobsters, people want to hire killers, a hot cop and an even hotter bartender. All of these people enter Finlay's orbit for some disastrous and often hilarious situations. There are a few plot twists that add to the flavor of the story. And the ending leaves an opening for a possible sequel.

I really enjoyed Finlay Donovan Is Killing It. I found it to be a very funny and engaging suspense novel.

Finlay Donovan Is Killing It can now be found at most major book retailers.
