There is a style of music called Ska. It is very popular with the teen and early twenties dance crowd. I recently had the pleasure of listening to a band that takes Ska to a whole other level. The band plays Christian Ska music. The name of the band is Cold Turkey and comes from Topeka, Kansas.
The members of Cold Turkey are young. They all are either in high school or have just graduated.
Glenn Shipps is the front man for the band. Glenn plays guitar and does lead vocals. Tommy Guffey plays the Sax and does lead and background vocals. Eric Hirst plays bass guitar. Matt Giffin plays trumpet and does background vocals. His brother, Marc Griffin, also does background vocals along with playing the trombone. And last but not least, there is Chris Woolaway on the drums.
The band does covers of bands like the Supertones and the W's. One of the most popular songs that Cold Turkey plays is the W's You Are The Devil (and the Devil Is Bad).
The band also has three original songs. The songs are Dry Ground, Cold Turkey and Dependence Day.
The mission statement of the band says that they will praise Jesus Christ through Ska music. And that they will always give God all of the glory for his works through them.
Cold Turkey recently performed at a youth rally that my church put together. The crowd was small but enthusiastic. To see a group of kids jumping around and dancing to music about God was really awesome.
The band has MP3 samples of their original songs. They are on the Cold Turkey web site.
Go check out the Cold Turkey web site. Download the demo songs and discover what people around northeast Kansas already know. Cold Turkey is a great Ska band that brings the ministry of God to everyone through their music.
