Experience The Civil War

Bruce Von Stiers

A while back Southpeak Interactive teamed up with the folks from The History Channel and came up wit h a computer program called Eyes Of The Nation. It featured a whole bunch of historical data from The Library Of Congress. Now these two have done it again. Their brand new project is about the conflict between the North and the South. The title of the program is The Civil War Experience.

The program has five different areas. There is the Eyewitness area, Games, Trivia, the Web and a section for More Info. This is all tied together in the Main Menu. The menu covers different things like the Politics Of War and the Legacy Of War. Other parts to access from the menu are Troops And Battles, Daily Lives and The Civil War Experience Tour. The People section allows you to read around 150 biographical sketches of important individuals from the Civil War.

There is a timeline in the program that shows information on over 400 events that occurred during the Civil War. There is both a military timeline and a political timeline. Each one lists specific dates that trigger events in the war. The political timeline even has some events from thirty to forty years before the war actually started.

The program comes with a search function that allows you to go directly to a particular subject. Need some information about the Lawrence raids or Harper's Ferry? You can go right to that information by using the Search function. There is also a large glossary that has just about 200 definitions and terms from that era.

The Eyewitness area of the program lets you hear some experiences of people from the war as they would have told them. The Trivia area keeps you guessing with some tough questions about the various points, people and places of the war. And there is a Blockade Runner game along with a cannon shooting gallery that is pretty fun.

The program is tied directly to The Civil War Experience web site. Here you can find the most updated information about things other Civil War enthusiasts are interested in. Create a profile page so that others can interact with you. There are chats with historians, writers and reenactors. This web site is for members only, which you become when you access the site through the program.

The Civil War Experience is a new way to study and understand the Civil War. It has some fun stuff (the two games), some trivia, and a wealth of information about the war that can be accessed with the click of a mouse button.

If you want to learn more about the Civil War and have some fun doing it, The Civil War Experience is the one computer program you should get.
