Mikey's Choice

Bruce Von Stiers

There are many religions in the world today. Two of the most public religions are Judaism and Catholicism. Whereas some of the beliefs of the two religions are the same, many are not.

What happens when a set of parents, one Jewish and the other Catholic, try to get their child to choose their religion over the other one? In one instance, you get the short comedy film Choosing Sides.

Mikey and his parents, Peter and Ellen, are at the dinner table. Mom and dad ask Mikey about his upcoming twelfth birthday. Ellen wants to know if Mikey wants to start studying for his bar mitzvah. Peter is not having any of that. He tells Mikey that they want him to decide which religion belong to.

What happens after that is a bizarrely funny argument between Peter and Ellen on the merits and detriments of both of their religions. That cumulates into a surprise ending. One that both Peter and Ellen should have seen coming but didn't.

Max Abe Plush played Mikey. He's appeared in the television shows Blue Bloods, Royal Pains, Believe and Person of Interest.

Rachel lynn Jackson played Ellen. She's appeared in The Last O.G. and The Other Two along with films such as Easy Living and Just Sing.

Timothy J. Cox played Peter. He has over a hundred fifty screen credits from starring in short films such as After, Creatures of Habit and Hard Truths.

Lee Loechler was the director. He directed the comedy series How To With Tia and Mia and the film Sylvester and the Giant Gummy Bear.

Yael Green wrote the screenplay. He has written for several television shows including Angie Tribeca, Dickinson and Space Force.

Choosing Sides is a delightful short comedy film. It takes a normally dramatic argument over a choice of religious beliefs and takes a fun poke at it.
