A Celestial Awakening

Bruce Von Stiers

John English is a first time author. He has studied things like shamans and ways of enlightenment. John has written a novel that one fellow writer compared to the Celestine Prophesy. This novel is titled The Shift An Awakening. It was published by DreamTime Publications.

Scott Stahl is businessman in Phoenix. He has been sickened by the waste and corruption in government. Scott is very much in favor of campaign reform laws. He feels that special interest groups are influencing the political machine that run the country. Scott feels compelled to do something about it.

What does Scott do? He establishes a new political party. This new entity is called the Centrust Party. Two of the main focuses for the party is eliminating soft money for political campaigns and having a flat tax rate instead of the archaic tax structure that exists.

Scott is getting his wisdom through dreams or visions. It would seem that a spirit, God if you will, is directing Scott to proceed with this. To aid in this reforming of the country, several people seem to pop up on the horizon. There is a news reporter, an entrepreneur and eventually a Senator. There is also a priest and a shaman who jump on board with Scott and the Centrust Party.

Some of the events of the recent past are woven into the story. The embattled conclusion of the last presidential race is part of the story. Some of the circumstances were changed to fit the plot, but the bitter fighting that the race ended being is included. And the September 11, 2001 events are covered as well.

The shift that the title refers to is a shift of consciousness of the American people. This shift deals with the values that people place on things in their lives and the political structure that we live under. Changes in the tax laws, being less dependant on big business, eating organically and becoming more spiritual is all part of the theme of the book.

The Shift is an interesting novel. It doesn’t have a lot of high drama but is a subtle glide through the perspectives that the author brings to the table. There are a few intense moments in the novel, as an asteroid seems to become an imminent threat to the planet. And there is loss of life that helps define one of the components of the story.

Can God speak to us directly? Are people like the shaman in the story real or just charlatans? Will God put events and circumstance together to make a significant change on American lives like in this novel? Who knows for sure? Having a more traditional spiritual background, Methodist, I’m not sure that I really believe in shamans and some of the other trappings of the novel. But it does make a rather interesting and thought provoking read.
