Commenting On Calvin

Bruce Von Stiers
The folks at Parsons Technology have a fine Church and Bible division. One of their flagship products from this division is the QuickVerse Bible program. Aside from different Bible versions and commentaries, you can add things to the program. This is done via the STEP program, which allows you to view a complete book in a universal format. One add-on program that I just looked at is John Calvin's Bible Commentaries.

Who is John Calvin and why should I be interested in his commentaries? Well, John was a theologian and reformer from France. He lived during the sixteenth century. Calvin became the curate of St. Martin de Marteville in 1527. During his tenure, he became influenced by the works of Erasmus and Luther. He became so influenced by these teachings that he converted to Protestant and had to escape to Paris to avoid religious persecution.

After writing the Institutes of the Christian Religion, Calvin moved to Geneva. There he became a strong religious leader. Through his guidance and leadership, Geneva changed into a city of high moral fiber.

John Calvin is also said to have founded the Presbyterian movement and the Reformed Church.

This program contains the complete 22-volume set of John Calvin's Bible Commentaries. These commentaries have been read for several centuries. Some of the things in the collection are commentaries on the New Testament. The book of Revelation and 2 & 3 John have been excluded from these commentaries. There are also commentaries on the Old Testament. Like the commentaries in the New Testament, some books are excluded. These excluded books are Job, Song of Solomon, Proverbs and Judges.

The program comes with QuickVerse 5 so you don't need to go buy the complete QuickVerse package. But you might want later. It really is a great program.

To use the John Calvin's Bible Commentaries, you'll need either Windows 95 or 98. You will also need a 486 computer with 8 MB of RAM and 40 MB of free hard drive space. A 2x CD-ROM drive is needed as well.

John Calvin's Bible Commentaries can be purchased for $ 99.95. You can get it directly from Parsons Technology. Their web site can be found at www.parsonstech.com.

To learn more about the Bible and what earlier theologians wrote, John Calvin's Bible Commentaries is a great place to start. People from several generations have read and learned from John Calvin.
