Dreamworks has come up with a few good things. One of them was supposed to be a family type of animated movie about insect life. The film's name is Antz. What I thought would be a film for the whole family ended up being one that I would have not let a young child watch.
The plot goes something like this. There is this worker ant named Z who tries to impress a girl ant in a bar. The girl ends up being Princess Bala, who is out slumming. In order to see the princess again, trades places with his friend Weaver, who is a soldier ant. Instead of meeting the princess again, Z is shipped into battle against a termite colony. He ends up being the sole survivor of the battle. In a convoluted plot element, Z accidentally kidnaps Bala and then uncovers a plot to take over the ant colony by General Mandible.
The voice of Z is provided by Woody Allen. Princess Bala is the voice of Sharon Stone and Weaver is done by Sylvester Stallone. Balla's mother, the Queen, is Anne Bancroft and the voice of General Mandible is done by Gene Hackman. Other actors that loaned their voices to the film were Jane Curtin, Jennifer Lopez, Dan Aykroyd, Christopher Walken, Danny Glover and John Mahoney.
The film could have been a lot better if the innuendo and adult humor had been toned down. Little kids get enough of this type of garbage through the sitcoms as it is. They don't need to see in an animated film that supposed to be for the whole family.
If you don't mind your child being exposed to adult humor and sexual situations, then let them watch Antz. But if you want a family value animation, watch something else.
Antz is rated PG. It has a run time of 83 minutes.
